Indications, Surgical Technique & Recovery
1. WHO IT'S FOR
• ED not helped by pills or injections • ED with Peyronie's • Failed prior implant
2. HOW IT'S DONE
• Two cylinders, pump, reservoir • Small incision • All inside the body
3. RECOVERY
• Swelling for 2 weeks • Activation teaching at 4–6 weeks • Sensation and orgasm unchanged
An inflatable penile implant is a three-piece device placed entirely inside the body: two cylinders in the penis, a pump in the scrotum, and a small fluid reservoir in the lower belly. Squeezing the pump fills the cylinders for an erection; a release button deflates them.
Who it's for
Men whose erectile dysfunction hasn't responded to, or who don't want to use, pills, injections, or a vacuum device. It's also used for erection problems combined with Peyronie's disease, and to replace an implant that has failed.
What it's like
The erection looks and feels natural and lasts as long as you want. Sensation, orgasm, and ejaculation stay the same. Nothing is visible from the outside. I'm recognized by Coloplast as a Center of Excellence for the Titan® inflatable penile implant.
The operation
Usually outpatient or one night, through a small incision at the base of the penis or scrotum.
Recovery
Swelling and soreness for a couple of weeks. I teach you to use the device at a visit about four to six weeks after surgery, and most men start using it for sex then.
Risks
Infection, mechanical problems over time, a change in the feel of length, and, rarely, erosion. Revision, if needed, is often a single operation.
